Coston<\/a> is the woman engineer ATS is honoring today for the U.S. National Women&#8217;s History Month.<\/p>\n<p>Martha became a widow in 1848 at a young age after having eloped with her husband Benjamin Franklin Coslin.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Their young marriage was hallmarked by her keen interest in his work as the U.S. Navy&#8217;s Pyrotechnic Lab Director.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 When her husband passed away,\u00c2\u00a0 she was left with four sons, her brilliant engineering mind, an enterprising spirit and need to provide on her own. She soon turned to her husbands diagrams for night flares realizing the importance they would have for ship-to-ship communication in the night.\u00c2\u00a0 She soon perfected the idea, sold it to the U.S. Navy for $20,000 dollars and started Coston Supply Company to manufacture the night signals.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Her work on flares revolutionized night communications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Martha J.
