Learn the tricks and tips our engineers use performing CFD Analaysis at our June 23 Free Webinar

We hold at least one webinar a month here at ATS. They are always chock full of solid thermal engineering information. And by that I don’t mean just some fancy slides with examples. No. We talk about the basic calculations involved in the science (some would call “black art”) of thermal management. We talk about how to “do” thermal management.

And it’s not always about “a bigger fan”.

And one of the most helpful tools we have in our arsenal is Computational Fluid Dynamics, or CFD for short. We do alot of CFD. Its not the only analysis we do, but, it forms an important part of our design cycle and it should yours as well. Whether you are developing a thermal management solution centered around a heat sink, heat pipe, air flow, what have you, CFD can be a helpful part of the cycle. As our founder and CEO, Kaveh Azar, once noted:

“When you use CFD properly, you have an upper hand on achieving thermal management solutions faster, cheaper and more effectively,” says Dr. Azar. You spend less time on trial and error in the lab, assembling and testing prototypes and sample parts. The more you know about CFD programs, the better you can simulate the important elements and avoid wasting time and memory where it’s not needed.

I’d like to invite you to our next webinar, being held June 23rd, 2PM EST, entitled, “Tips and Techniques for Best Use of CFD for Heat Sinks and Systems Modeling” We’ll be covering some great stuff in this webinar around how we use CFD in our thermal engineering and how you can apply it to your work as well. Free Engineering Design Webinar: Demystifying LED Design for Everyday Applications with Concurrent CFD, July 28th, 2PM EST

Our friends over at Mentor Graphics are running a free webinar on July 28th at 2PM EST entitled, “Demystifying LED Design for Everyday Applications with Concurrent CFD”. Dr. John Perry is involved and many of you will remember him from Flomerics.

CFD for LED design workshop topics include:

  • How concurrent CFD can help you make thermal design decisions
  • How to choose the best materials for both manufacture and cost
  • How to quickly build several design study cases and to find the optimum design
  • To quickly obtain analysis results both graphically and numerically
  • How to share the results with Microsoft Excel and Word

Sound like it’ll be great!  You can register by clicking over to Mentor Graphics here: “Demystifying LED Design for Everyday Applications with Concurrent CFD“

Tony Koryban Mail Bag Archives: how to determine the percent error when comparing measured temperatures with CFD predictions

CFD has been a boon to thermal engineers designing next generation thermal management solutions. But, what happens when the measured temperature doesn’t meet the CFD projection? Tony Koryban at Cooling Zone has a good take on this and what to do. You can read all about it his post, “How to determine the percent error when comparing measured temperatures with CFD predictions“.

ATS Free Thermal Management Webinar: CFD as a Tool to Perform Heat Sink and System Modeling

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools have become simulation workhorses, enabling design engineers to tackle electronics cooling challenges on-the-fly. Some tips and tricks are invaluable in performing these analyses. Among them: the simplest methods of preparing a CFD model; the best techniques for meshing; and how to model a system’s components, such as fans and perforated plates. Attendees will learn about common and not-so-common issues in CFD, and how to overcome them.

You can sign up for our free thermal management webinar, being held Thursday, June 24, 2010 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EDT at this link: “CFD as a Tool to Perform Heat Sink and System Modeling“

Case Study: Thermal analysis & heat sink design to optimize cooling of 16 Core packet processor

Computer-driven simulation and analysis of thermal characteristics can be used to develop optimal cooling solutions for high-performance board designs. Of course, those designs have to be verified by real-world testing to improve MTBF and shorten time-to-market.

ATS recently did just that. Facing a problem involving a PCI-X card, a hot 16-core 500Mhz packet processor, and a COTS PCI type, rack mount chassis, ATS found a solution where none could be found before. There was alot to do and we’re happy to share what we did in this white paper at RTC Magazine, “Thermal Analysis and Heat Sink Design Optimize Cooling of High-Performance Modules“
