Q4 Webinars Now Open for Registration

ATS, Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. just announced the final three webinars that will be presented as part of the 2012 webinar series. These free technical presentations, tought by leading experts in the industry, provide engineering-level training in key areas of thermal management in electronics cooling.

The following list provides the webinar topics, dates, and registration info:

LED Thermal Management in Commercial and Consumer Lighting Applications
Why does thermal management matter? Excess heat directly affects both short-term and long-term LED performance. The short-term effects are color shift and reduced light output while the long-term effect is accelerated lumen depreciation and thus shortened useful life. Participants will learn how to diagnose and solve thermal issues in consumer and commercial LED applications.

Natural Convection Cooling: Optimizing Heat Sink Fin Spacing and More for Heat Transfer

Most high-powered electronic devices are cooled by forced convection airflow, but occasionally there is a need for natural convection cooling. Determining factors, which include cost, noise, vibration and reliability, can cause the need to eliminate the use of a fan or blower, particularly in consumer electronics and outdoor enclosures. Attendees will learn more about how to implement natural convection cooling, how to optimize for fin spacing and other important design elements for a successful thermal management solution.

Heat Pipes and Vapor Chambers in Heat Transfer
As electronics become faster and more powerful, thermal solutions must evolve to deal with the increasing heat loads. Simply increasing the size of a heat sink, or adding a fan, was once enough to provide the required increased performance. Liquid cooling through the use of heat pipes, vapor chambers and microchannels can be excellent solutions in these high heat applications. Attendees will learn how to deploy heat pipes and vapor chambers in thermal management, including the use of microchannels.

Announcing our ATS Electronics Cooling Webinars for Third Quarter of 2012

ATS, Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. will present technical webinars on electronic cooling topics in July, August and September 2012. Each of these free events will provide engineering-level training in a key area of modern thermal management.

Here are the different webinar topics and presentation times:

Using Thermal Interface Materials to Improve Heat Sink Thermal Performance

July 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. ET

To cool hotter components, engineers are using larger fans and heat sinks, and increasing surface areas. These hardware enhancements can add significantly to design costs. In many cases, cooling performance can be improved by using a higher performance interface material between the case and the heat sink. Participants will learn the importance of lowering thermal resistance using thermal interface materials, or TIMs, and the different kinds of TIMs available from the market.

Air Jet Impingement Cooling

August 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. ET

Ongoing increases in power in devices such as processors and IGBTs mean that higher capacity cooling methods are needed to remove excess heat. One such method is the jet impingement of a liquid or gas onto a surface on a continuous basis. Lab experiments at ATS have shown up to a 40% improvement in cooling achieved using this method. This webinar will explore jet impingement cooling theory, implementation and best practices.

LED Thermal Management in Commercial and Consumer Lighting Applications

September 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. ET

Excess heat directly affects both short-term and long-term LED performance. The short-term effects are color shift and reduced light output, while the long-term effect is accelerated lumen depreciation and thus shortened useful life. Participants will learn how to diagnose and solve thermal issues in consumer and commercial LED applications.

Each of these one-hour online tutorials will include detailed visuals, real world examples, instructions, definitions and references. Audience questions will be answered by the presenters during and after the presentation. One or more ATS PhD-level thermal engineers will be presenting live.

There is no cost to attend these ATS webinars, but virtual seating is limited. Registration is available online at http://www.qats.com, or by calling 1-781-949-2522.

New Electronics Cooling Webinars are Open for Second Quarter of 2012

Each month during the second quarter of 2012, ATS will present a technical webinar covering different topics within the dynamic world of electronics cooling. Each of these one-hour, online tutorials will include detailed visuals, definitions, instructions, case studies and references. One or more ATS PhD-level thermal engineers will be presenting live. Viewers will be able to key in questions during and after the presentation.

Each Q2 webinar is planned for a Thursday afternoon (ET) late in the month. These are the second quarter topics for the ATS webinars:

April 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. ET

How to Perform and Understand Air Velocity Measurement within Electronics Systems

Participants will learn about the importance of measuring air velocity in a system, the instruments necessary for obtaining useful measurements and where these velocities should be recorded.

May 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. ET

CFD as a Tool to Perform Heat Sink and System Modeling

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools have become indispensable simulation tools, enabling design engineers to confront electronics cooling challenges on demand. Some tips and tricks are invaluable in performing these analyses. Among them: the simplest methods of preparing a CFD model; the best techniques for meshing; and how to model a systems components, such as fans and perforated plates. Attendees will learn about common and not-so-common issues in CFD, and how to overcome them.

Heat Sink Selection Made Easy

As heat dissipation needs for electronic devices rapidly grow, choosing the right heat sink the first time is essential. With so many application requirements and heat sink options, this can be a daunting task. In this webinar, attendees will learn about the importance of system airflow and its impact on heat sink design; attachment methods; and how to solve thermal design challenges.

Seats at each of these webinars are free, but limited. Registration is available online at http://www.qats.com, or by calling 1-781-949-2522.

Learn How to Cool Consumer Electronics in our February 23rd Webinar

“Thermal Management of Consumer Electronics” is the topic of our next webinar, on Thursday, February 23rd, 2PM EST. The free webinar will cover:

Consumer electronics are now being used in places that were once exclusive to business and military electronics. Products like Apple’s iPhone and iPad are sophisticated technologies with powerful processors housed in small spaces with restricted airflow. As a result, these devices, and others like them, are providing many new benefits, but they also bring higher thermal management needs. Attendees will learn the available cooling options, and important factors such as the importance of spreading resistance in component and system thermal management.

The webinar is going to be chock full of great information cooling consumer electronics. The webinar is free and taught by Dr. Kaveh Azar, one of the worlds foremost authorities on heat transfer. Click here to register: “Thermal Management of Consumer Electronics“
